The endometrium refers to the layer that constitutes the inner wall of the uterus in mammals. The endometrium responds to both estrogens and progesterone, thus undergoing significant changes in accordance with the sexual cycle (estrous cycle, menstrual cycle). The endometrium covers the mucosa, which consists of the mucosal epithelium and the lamina propria beneath it. The mucosal epithelium can be columnar, cuboidal, or stratified columnar. During estrogen secretion, the epithelial cells will grow larger, divide, and increase in number.
