Aortic endothelial cells (AECs) constitute the inner lining of the aorta and are constantly subjected to blood flow shear stress. In response to shear stress, endothelial cells secrete various endothelial factors, which in turn influence vascular contraction and growth. AECs also regulate the expression of cell adhesion molecules to control and finely tune inflammatory responses and tissue fibrosis. Primary AECs cultured in vitro can effectively assist researchers in studying the mechanisms of endothelial dysfunction, the pathogenesis of diseases such as atherosclerosis, and the development of new therapeutic approaches.
