Type II alveolar cells (ATII) are also known as granular alveolar cells, which are scattered between Type I alveolar cells (ATI) and at the junctions of adjacent alveolar septa. They are smaller in size, cubic in shape, with their surfaces slightly protruding into the alveolar lumen. The nucleus is large and round, and the cytoplasm is lightly stained, often contains vacuoles.
