Description | The A549 cell line, established in 1972, originates from the lung adenocarcinoma of a Caucasian male. These hypotriploid alveolar basal epithelial cells have a modal chromosome number of 66, with occasional variations. A549 cells express keratin and have the capacity to synthesize lecithin and contain unsaturated fatty acids. They are squamous in nature and play a role in facilitating the diffusion of substances across the lung’s alveoli. In laboratory settings, A549 cells grow as adherent monolayers. They thrive in a nutrient-rich DMEM culture medium supplemented with fetal bovine serum or F12-K medium with 10% non-heat inactivated fetal bovine serum.
Why choose A549 from AcceGen? AcceGen’s A549 cells offer several compelling reasons to choose them for your research needs. Firstly, they ensure high quality and viability, providing reliable and consistent results. Secondly, these cells are guaranteed to be sterile and free from mycoplasma contamination, minimizing the risk of experimental interference. Additionally, AcceGen provides optimal incubation conditions, allowing for the cells’ optimal growth and functionality.

Application | FOR RESEARCH USE ONLY The A549 cell line, which has been approved by the FDA, finds applications in various fields. One major application is in adenovirus production, including the replication of adenovirus constructs that do not require complementation by the viral oncogene EA1. A549 cells are also used for disease modeling, particularly for studying the metabolic processing of lung tissue and mechanisms of drug delivery. They have been employed in researching lung cancer, allergies, asthma, and respiratory infections. In drug development, A549 cells are utilized for in vitro and in vivo testing of novel drugs, including xenograft lung cancer models. Furthermore, A549 cells have been used in enzymatic studies to investigate cancer cell proliferation and the effects of insulin. Additionally, they serve as a host for CRISPR Cas9 delivery, enabling precise DNA editing.
