Human neuroblastoma cell line SH-SY5Y is a subline of the SK-N-SH cells, which was established in culture in 1970 from a bone marrow biopsy of a metastatic neuroblastoma of a 4-year-old female and has undergone three rounds of clonal selection.
This is a relatively homogeneous neuroblast-like cell line. The initial characterization of the SH-SY5Y cell line showed moderate activity of dopamine-β-hydroxylase and negligible levels of choline acetyl-transferase, acetylcholinesterase and butyryl-cholinesterase, basal noradrenaline (NA) release and tyrosine hydroxylase activity. In addition, SH-SY5Y neuroblastoma cells also express opioids, muscarinic and nerve growth factor receptors.
