These specialized cells are responsible for regulating vascular tone by releasing and breaking down endothelium-derived vasoactive factors, thus modulating the levels of vasoconstrictors and vasodilators through enzymatic processes. This intricate control extends to influencing myocardial contractile behavior. Beyond vascular function, RCMEC are integral in regulating leukocyte recruitment, inflammation, and angiogenesis within the microvasculature. Notably, they exhibit the ability to trans-differentiate into myofibroblasts, hinting at their involvement in matrix accumulation and fibrotic disorders. RCMEC express key markers such as vWF/Factor VIII and CD31 (PECAM).
